As we commemorate Women’s History Month, I find myself reflecting on the remarkable legacy of my grandmother Cassie, whom I affectionately call Grandma Doll for her elegant style. Her life story is one of inspiration, resilience, and unwavering dedication, embodying the values that continue to guide me today.
Born in 1921 on a farm in North Carolina, Cassie was the eldest child, a role that shaped her character and determination. Her journey from rural roots to a prominent nursing career in Chicago is a testament to her courage and tenacity. In a time when many women were confined to domestic roles, she forged her own path, graduating as class president from nursing school in Baltimore and becoming a working mother of two—a true trailblazer.
Cassie’s career was marked by her leadership and compassion. Whether riding her bicycle through Chicago’s harsh winters to care for patients or running the Bensenville Homes Society, her dedication never wavered. She was a leader who consistently showed up with kindness, optimism, and intelligence, breaking barriers with humility and grace.
Her love for animals mirrored my own, a shared passion that brought a kitten home in her nurse’s apron pocket and countless beloved furry family members in her life. Even in her approach to family conflicts, she displayed a calm, loving demeanor, teaching us that strength and gentleness can coexist.
Throughout my life, I have uncovered so many parallels to her story and continue to see how her grace and courage have been passed down to me. Nearly two decades after her passing, Grandma Doll’s influence remains profound. She demonstrated commitment, love, and altruism. Her legacy inspires me to continue her mission, doing meaningful, purpose-filled work and leading with both care and courage.
As I reflect on her life, I am reminded of the power of subtle, steadfast leadership and the importance of pursuing our passions with integrity and purpose. This Women’s History Month, I honor Grandma Doll’s enduring impact, a guiding light in my journey and a beacon for the aspiring leaders I now raise.
